Summer Fruit

Summer Fruit

My friend Jill Graham took this great photo in Brooklyn, NY and called it "NJ Cherries" on Facebook.
She gave me permission to use it as a reference for my painting - so here's

"Jersey Cherries"

Enjoy!

I'm Seeing Green...

Spring Birch Trees
30x24

Transitioning from snowy bare tree branches to shades of green.  Hard to picture those leaves, but I know they are coming soon.  I'm ready - bring on the green.

Let it Snow

First Snow!

I love North Carolina.  Snow today - gone tomorrow.
Hope some more great paintings come from our one day 'blizzard'.

Day 30 - DONE

Day 30
Acrylic 6 x 6
Finished with just the paint left on my palette- the same way I started.
Feeling great about the Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days - okay, I think I missed two days.
Now I'm going to turn these little studies into 30x30s.
Wish me luck!

Day 28 - Sunshine

Day 28
Acrylic 12 x12

I love sunshine peeking through the gray clouds - like a promise.
Lots of scratching on this one - may require some sanding when dry.
But 60 degrees and sunny in January - why I love the South.

Day 26 & 27

Day 27
Acrylic 6x6
When something works - just keep doing it!

Day 26
Acrylic on panel 7x5
An example of when you don't know what to paint --- paint what you see.
Not my favorite.

Day 25 - Morning Through the Trees

Day 25

Acrylic 30x40
This is what greeted me after a week of rain - golden sunlight filtered through the forest in my back yard.
Stunning and hopeful.
Love it when a painting comes together like this one did - and it was fun!

Day 24 - Ink

Day 24
Acrylic and Ink 6x6

Green. Sky Blue. Black Ink.
No texture.
Simple and Fun.

Day 23 - Back At the Easel

Day 23
Acrylic 8x8

Really sick dog - Addison's Disease - treatable yeah! Demanding a lot of my time right now - but very thankful to have him with us.
Jumped into globs of paint left on my palette and created this today.  Lots of texture and showing more energy than I (and the sweet dog) possess.  Felt good to paint.  Dog made it to the studio!
Starting with a fresh palette tomorrow - see what happens after a good night's sleep.

Day 21 - Sick Puppy Means No Art

Day 21

Acrylic 6x6

This is what (WHO) I really worked on all day - The Dude.

He is one sick puppy - spent hours at the vet this morning.  Then returned at 5pm and just admitted to the Vet for overnight antibiotics and fluids.  Pray for my sweet puppy.  So hence, the painting above was my quick 30 minutes in the studio.  Gotta love acrylics for that reason.
Hope to get my studio buddy back tomorrow - then the world will be all right again.

Day 20 - The Beach

Day 20
Acrylic 9 x 12
"Over the Dune"
Sunshine does improve my mood.  Love the beach in winter.  May need to rework my dune in the forground with some shadows but like my reeds blowing in the wind.

Day 19 - Gray

Day 19
Acrylic - 4x6 on panel

The rain has obviously affected my mood.  Just shows how mercurial artists are...or need a Caribbean vacation.

Day 18 - Rain Rain Go Away

Day 18
Acrylic on Panel - 4x6
Nothing but gray skies for days.  Love me some gold accent.
Think this study would be great on a large canvas.

Day 17 - Sunshine

Day 17

Acrylic 6x6
Wishing for Sunshine on these dreary days.  Love my whispy clouds.  Want to recreate these small works on really big canvases.  Hum.

Day 16 - Downhill from here...

Day 16

Acrylic 8x8

Could not stand the gray day - undertoned this canvas in bright pink - may be too much.
But at least it's cheery.

Day 15- A Still Life?

Day 15
Acrylic 8x8
A Still Life?
When in doubt...or when you aren't too creative...paint a pomegranate.
May need some touch up on this one - but it was nice to paint reality today.

Day 14 - Spring

Day 14
Acrylic 8x8
I'm now done with the series - did Summer, Fall, Winter and now Spring.
Moving on to something else tomorrow.
Enjoy.

Day 13 - Are you feeling hot hot hot

Day 13
Day 13 - Acrylic 7x5 on Panel
'Are you feeling hot.hot.hot?' - Two day of sun and 70 degrees make me happy.
Three days of rain on the way.  May make me paint blue.

Day 12 - Winter in the South

Day 12
Day 12 - Acrylic 8x8
Winter in the South does not mean snow - today it means 70 degrees.
So a winter landscape is evergreens and brown trees - no snow.
North Carolina is a great place to live!

Day 11 - I see a series...

Day 11
Day 11 - Acrylic 8x8

I see a series - Winter Spring Summer Fall!
This painting (and yesterday's) were painted from a photo I took walking the Charlotte Greenway.
I'm loving the texture and the color - hope you are too.

Day 10 - My Favorite Painting So Far

Day 10

Love it!  Me unbound - this is how I like/want to paint.  Color. Texture. Light.
Yeah!

Day 9 of 30

Day 9
Feeling red...so another barn - this one from Wisconsin.
12 x 12 Acrylic
Loved being back in class at Braitman Studio today.
Such much talent in one room - thankful to be able to paint with these other fantastic artists.
See a collection of the studio's work starting Friday night (January 11, 2013)
at RedSky Gallery in Charlotte.
It will be fun!

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

Day 8 - I see a barn...

Day 8
I was working on a traditional barn on an larger canvas.  Decided to abstract it on a 6x6 gallery wrapped.
Quite pleased with the result.

Day 7 - One Week In!

Day 7
10x8 Acrylic
One week down - may be the longest I've ever kept any New Year Resolution.
Getting me into the studio every day - great discipline.
Yeah!

Day 5 & 6

Day 5
Day 5 - 5x7 Acrylic on Board
Love the red undertone and how if the red wasn't peeping through - the horizon line would be invisible.

So, today I had to get my oil changed - and the lobby had all these old Coastal Living magazines - page after page of beaches around the world - so I'm thinking island living for the next few paintings...

Day 6
Day 6 - 6x6 Acrylic on gallery canvas

Day 3

Day 3 - 7x5
So my idea of only using the paint left on my palette may not work in the long run.
But for Day 3 it made this little piece interesting.
But on to more important things...the thirty day challenge - and as I always say "She who has the most new supplies...wins".  I'm stocked up!  Thank you Binders and ASWExpress.

Day 2 - Just Abstracts

Day 2 - I've decided to go ABSTRACT - for me that means - not trying to 'figure out' what every thing is in a painting.  Loosing up.  A step away from realism and life.  I'm going to use the colors on my palatte from my current paintings.  One of my first paintings I did at Braitman studio was of a buffalo we saw in Yellowstone (big - 24 x 30) - it was ambitious.  So I brought it home and my great husband said "Nice clouds"....I said "They're mountains".   So I'm going abstract for my daily challenge.  It's a landscape -- you can decide whether it's a cloud or a mountain...or just say "nice painting".

Day One

Here's Day 1 - Gray Day at Figure 8 - 6"x6"

And here's me painting it -
